Whatever Happened to the Human Race?

Download Whatever Happened to the Human Race? PDF/eBook

By:Francis A. Schaeffer,C. Everett Koop
Published on 1983-06-01 by Crossway
ISBN 9781433516597

Synopsis
|If a mother can kill her own children, then what can be next?| Mother Teresa once asked. What indeed? Once the value of human life has been depreciated, as in Roe v. Wade and the Baby Doe Case, no one is safe. Once |quality of life| is substituted for the absolute value of human life itself, we all are endangered. Already respected scientists are calling for a time period following birth (a week or so) to decide if newborns have |sufficient quality of life| to be allowed to live. Already committees of |medical professionals| would like to decide whether the |quality of life| of the elderly or anyone seriously ill is high enough to allow them to go on living. In this moving book, the renowned pediatric surgeon and Surgeon General of the United States, C. Everett Koop, M.D., joins with one of the leading Christian thinkers of our day, Francis A. Schaeffer, to analyze the widespread implications and frightening loss of human rights brought on by today's practices of abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia. They see the present as a crucial turning point. Choices are being made that undermine human rights at their most basic level. Practices once labeled |unthinkable| are now considered acceptable. The destruction of human life, young and old, is being sanctioned on an ever-increasing scale by the medical profession, by the courts, by parents, and by silent citizens. |But what can I do?| you ask. |I'm just one person.| You can start by reading this book. Yes, it will shock you. And it will make you weep. But it will also help you see how you can actually make a difference.

The Human and the Divine in History

Download The Human and the Divine in History PDF/eBook

By:Paul Niskanen
Published on 2004-06-22 by A&C Black
ISBN 9780567082138

Synopsis
The Human and the Divine in History investigates the possibility that the author of Daniel knew and drew upon the Histories of Herodotus. Daniel uses and develops Herodotean concepts such as the succession of world empires, dynastic dreams, and the focus on both human and divine cauration in explaining historical events. A comparative reading of these two texts illuminates Daniel's theology of history, showing it to be neither as exclusively eschatological nor as sectarian as is often supposed. Rather, it is specifically the end of exile\u0097understood as foreign domination\u0097that Daniel envisions for the entire Jewish people.

Theology of the Old Testament

By:John Rogerson
Published on 2011-01-01 by SPCK
ISBN 9780281063031

Synopsis
How should Christians approach the Old Testament? Should we use it to reconstruct what people believed several millennia ago? Or should we ask what the Old Testament says to us today and consider how it addresses today's world? J. W. Rogerson firmly believes that we should take the latter approach. Rogerson, an internationally respected scholar, has dedicated much of his academic life to probing the possibility of the abiding significance of the Old Testament. He shows how texts written for a strange and distant world with different social, religious and cultural factors can still speak to moral issues today.

Human Sexuality

Download Human Sexuality PDF/eBook

By:John C. Dwyer
Published on 1987 by Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN 9781556120763

Synopsis
Sexuality is both fascinating and troubling. It seems to promise that transcendence of ourselves which is our deepest human desire, and yet it makes us painfully aware of our limits and of the supreme difficulty of finding ourselves in the process of losing ourselves. The relationship of Christianity to sexuality has been particularly troubled, but this book is an attempt to reflect on the phenomenon of sexuality from the standpoint of what is central to Christianity, that is, the view of God and of the human condition which became real in the words and in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The book tries to answer this question: if we take Christianity seriously, how do we think about our sexuality and what do we do about it? This book draws on the ethical reflections of many thinkers, and it draws on much work in psychology, but its primary focus is either that of ethics or of psychology. The book intends to be theology: the attempt to talk intelligently about God and the relationship of God to every area of human existence and especially to those aspects of life which are near the center of the human personality: and foremost among such is sexuality.
